This Memorial Day will not feature parades or large gatherings. However, momentum has been building to honor this solemn day Taps Across America has been asking buglers and trumpet players all over the Country to play the haunting music of “Taps” on Monday May 31 at 3 PM local time.
I love this idea!… and it couldn’t come at a better time for us as a Nation to provide a healing antidote to the divisions, mistrust, traumas, and uncertainties that have plagued us. I believe that ceremony and rituals provide the structure that get us in touch with feelings and they have a power to heal.
I can’t bugle, but tomorrow at 3 PM I’m going to stand on my front porch and play this recording (.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WChTqYlDjtI and in its soulful refrain, I will think about all those who have given their lives fighting for the American ideal of freedom, equality, and justice. I will remember all the soldiers, not only those in uniform, but all the spirit warriors in our convoluted history who have given their lives in the pursuit of that founding vision.
Join me, feel the music, and let’s come together in a community of shared spirit and remind ourselves that the dreams of our forefathers still live.
I say this For All My Relations, Mi Takuye Oyasin.
